Bi-annual technical meeting of the Alliance of Cultural Landscapes and Related Sites in Talayónica Menorca

Territorio Mudéjar participated in the technical workshops of the Alliance of Cultural Landscapes and Related Sites, held in Menorca Talayónica, from March 10 to 12.

Maru Gallego, from the TM team, has traveled to the World Heritage site since 2023 to participate in the meeting on Communicating World Heritage Properties: Interpretive and Outreach Resources to Connect with Society. This event brings together experts in heritage, communication, and outreach to discuss the best strategies for conveying the value of sites inscribed on the World Heritage List.

This event, which combines theoretical sessions with field experiences, aims to share experiences of initiatives aimed at strengthening the connection between heritage and society through the use of tools and methodologies that facilitate its interpretation and understanding by the public.

This biannual technical meeting of the Landscape Alliance included an intense day of conferences and visits to representative sites in Menorca, such as the Naveta des Tudons, the Ciutadella-Can Saura Museum, and the Numa Foundation.

We heard Pablo Jiménez Díaz, from the Ministry of Culture, discuss the different approaches to communicating World Heritage; Celia Martínez Yáñez of ICOMOS International speak about heritage law and regulation; we learned about a benchmark heritage education program from the San Millán de la Cogolla Foundation; and we learned about practical cases of heritage dissemination, such as the experience of the Madinat al Zahra Archaeological Complex, the educational project in the Sierra de Tramuntana, and the initiatives of Talayotic Menorca aimed at the local community.

First meeting in Aranjuez of representatives of administrations and entities that are part of the Landscape Alliance

This Thursday, Territorio Mudéjar attended the first meeting of representatives from the administrations and entities associated under the acronym of the Alliance of Cultural Landscapes and Related Sites in Aranjuez.

The meeting was attended by Juan Antonio Sánchez Quero, president of the Territorio Mudéjar association and mayor of Tobed; and Victoria Trasobares, managing director.

The goal has been to work on the first steps of a renewed work program for 2026 to position the network internationally by activating collaborations between partners, raising the profile of the partner network, and activating institutional support that will enable the construction of a strong, forward-looking project.

Territorio Mudéjar has been a partner of the landscape network since October 2023 as a related site through the Mudéjar Architecture of Aragon UNESCO World Heritage Site as a serial asset, i.e., a declaration that groups 10 buildings in five locations and in which the understanding of the building’s environment, the urban landscape, and the landscape are essential for quality management of the assets.

The Alliance of Cultural Landscapes and Related Sites is an initiative that aims to connect different cultural landscapes and related sites, illustrating the evolution of society and human settlements over the years, influenced by the limitations and/or advantages presented by the natural environment, and by internal and external social, economic and cultural forces, to create a joint work of man and nature of outstanding universal value.

Visit of World Heritage managers to the Bizkaia Suspension Bridge

Persona caminando sobre la pasarela del Puente de Vizcaya, estructura de hierro declarada Patrimonio Mundial.

Our technical and project study visits with the World Heritage management partners took us today to the Bizkaia Suspension Bridge.

This bridge is one of the most outstanding constructions of the European Industrial Revolution and iron architecture. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 2006 for its striking work that perfectly combines beauty, aesthetics, and functionality. It is also a member of the Alliance of Landscapes and Related Sites.

We were fortunate to have Marta Uriarte, the manager of the Hanging Bridge, join us on our trip. We’re returning her visit after she visited us in Territorio Mudéjar in April for the Alliance assembly.

The meeting was very beneficial, and we were able to discuss industrial heritage, land use management, and waterways as historical articulaters of the territory, among other topics. In fact, we are already studying a joint project for 2025.

We continue working on the management of World Heritage.

Workshop of the Alliance of Cultural Landscapes and Related World Heritage Sites in Gran Canaria

Territorio Mudéjar has participated in the workshop Alliance of Cultural Landscapes and Related World Heritage Sites “The involvement of local communities in the management of cultural landscapes”, which took place in Gran Canaria on 24 and 25 October, in the Cultural Landscape of Risco Caído and the Sacred Mountains of Gran Canaria.

This meeting has been a fruitful exchange of good practices and applied management models: shared agreement models and tools for public-private collaboration in the management of heritage resources from the cultural landscape strategy focused on effective local development.

A pleasure to share, discuss and continue learning about heritage management.

Territorio Mudéjar and the Alliance of World Territory Cultural Landscapes hold their biannual assembly in Calatayud, Cervera de la Cañada and Tobed

Territorio Mudéjar and the Alliance of Cultural Landscapes and Related World Heritage Sites are holding their biannual assembly on 25 and 26 April in Calatayud, Tobed, Cervera de la Cañada and Zaragoza. The meeting, entitled “Cultural Landscape and Management Plans for UNESCO World Heritage Sites ” will be attended by speakers from Spain and Italy.

The Alliance, which brings together World Heritage properties in the categories of landscapes and sites or monuments, aims to serve as a link between landscapes and sites to share experiences, seek solutions to various common problems, train their technicians in specific areas and obtain resources to develop joint activities. Specifically, the following are part of the Alliance: the Cultural Landscape of Aranjuez, Ibiza-Biodiversity and Culture, the Cultural Landscape of the Sierra de la Tramuntana, the city of Sintra, the Palm Grove of Elche, the Alhambra and the Generalife, the Cultural Landscape of Las Médulas and the Hercules Lighthouse in A Coruña.

The meeting will begin on Thursday 25th with a study visit to Calatayud, the church of Santa Tecla in Cervera de la Cañada and the church of the Virgin of Tobed, monuments declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

In the afternoon, the technical sessions will begin at the Mudéjar Museum of Tobed, with the participation of experts from Icomos Spain, Complutense University of Madrid, Andalusian Heritage Institute, Landscape Observatory of Catalonia, University of Zaragoza, and Territorio Mudéjar (both from the direction and with the experiences of the artistic residencies).

On Friday, the talks will continue with specialists from the IPH-Heritage and Humanities Institute, the University of Granada, the Politecnico di Torino and the Landscape Alliance.

Victoria Trasobares, director of Territorio Mudéjar, highlighted the essential work to reconnect the monument with its context, especially that of the inhabitants of the villages. And she recalled that the priority objective is to ensure not only the conservation of the identity and uniqueness of the territories, but also to address the immediate future, in the medium term, the innovative and sustainable management of the villages.

It should be remembered that the General Assembly of the Alliance of Cultural Landscapes and Related World Heritage Sites approved in November in A Coruña the inclusion of Territorio Mudéjar as a new member.

Inclusion in the Alliance allows Territorio Mudéjar to participate jointly in national and international fairs, to seek funding for joint projects, to disseminate its activities among the other partners and to hold technical conferences to address challenges, opportunities and analysis of common problems.

The last technical conferences of the Landscape Alliance were held in November under the title ‘Landscapes and Sites. Participate to coexist’ and were organised by the Tower of Hercules and the Alliance of Landscapes and Related World Heritage Sites, with the support of the City Council of A Coruña and the Tourism and Congress Consortium. The Ministry of Culture and Sport and the Provincial Council of A Coruña also collaborated. The event addressed the role of society in the conservation of World Heritage landscapes and sites, inviting reflection on the participation of institutions, communities and associations to protect and enhance these places.

This assembly includes a technical conference for partners organised around the theme “Cultural landscape and management plans for UNESCO World Heritage Sites”, which will be attended by speakers and partners from Spain, Andorra, Portugal and Italy. On this occasion, Territorio Mudéjar organised a European visit-meeting in Calatayud, Tobed and Cervera de la Cañada with a team from the University of Zaragoza, the Politecnico di Torino and the Politecnico di Milano. This meeting served to present and reflect on the preliminary study for the elaboration of the management plan for Mudejar Architecture in Aragon.

* This project of Territorio Mudéjar has been selected in the 2023 call for grants for projects for the conservation and dissemination of World Heritage properties of the Ministry of Culture and Sport. Territorio Mudéjar is thus part of a group of more than 20 Spanish organisations working to promote and improve the application of the World Heritage Convention and its guidelines. These grants are financed by the Ministry of Culture and aim to promote the development of projects for the management, protection and conservation of these assets, as well as to promote their accessibility, visibility and dissemination at national and international level.
