Church of San Pedro Apóstol, Saviñán

CURRENT PROTECTION STATUS: ACI

TYPE OF ASSET: Property

CATEGORY: Religious

ARCHITECTURAL STYLE: Mudejar

CONSTRUCTION DATE: 16th century
Built in the 16th century, this simple brick structure features an arcade, in the manner of the Aragonese loggia. The tower is especially striking, constructed entirely of brick and divided into four sections, the first three of which are square plan, while the top section is octagonal in shape.

The façade walls boast brick decorative motifs, including friezes of angled brick and diamond shapes. The use of angled brick dates back to the 13th century, of Caliphal origin, and persists throughout the Mudejar period, with the staggered arrangement being introduced in the 16th century. In addition, crisscrossing patterns are also widespread throughout the period, the heading bond and diamond arrangement being used from the early 14th century.

In addition, the second and third sections have round-arched openings, which are covered over in the second section, while they hold bells in the third and fourth sections. The sections are separated by brick cavetto impost moldings.
