In a strategic alliance with the Tourism Department of the Provincial Council of Zaragoza, we offer you 19 accompanied cultural routes, with the possibility of 36 dates, so that you can visit all the villages of the association Territorio Mudéjar.

Cultural routes "Pueblos Territorio Mudéjar".

These cultural routes have been designed on the basis of the heritage and cultural elements that we have preserved from the roots in our territory of the Andalusian Islamic tradition since the 8th century and its permanence in the Christian western world, from the fusion of which the Mudejar heritage of Aragon was born from the 13th century to the first decades of the 17th century.

Through 15 itineraries organised into 5 themes, the villages of the province of Zaragoza offer us exotic and attractive trips where you can discover not only magnificent architecture and the most refined arts, but also beautiful places, full of life and activity, with centuries-old crafts and a rich gastronomy based on local produce and the tradition of the landscape. These cultural routes are an opportunity to experience the territory from its essence.

Unesco World Heritage Route: Tobed, Cervera de la Cañada y Calatayud

The Mudejar architecture of Aragon has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1986. with four buildings in the city of Teruel and with the extension in 2001 to Zaragoza, Calatayud, Cervera de la Cañada and Tobed with the incorporation of six buildings from the province of Zaragoza. This enlargement was key to understanding the true dimension and significance of Mudejar art in the Ebro valley and its tributaries, as well as the of Mudejar art in the Ebro valley and its tributaries, paradigmatic examples of the origin and development of a unique art that has that has endowed our territory with an international identity. This route is an essential part of our cultural routes.

Our research projects have given rise to new ways of planning cultural routes through the villages of Territorio Mudéjar.

This year we offer you three routes through which you can discover the secrets that make our villages unique through materials, landscapes and people that you will only be able to get to know from the hand of our great team of professionals.

Mestizo and frontier: Mudejar villages

The traces of the Islamic presence in the territory can still be The mark of the Islamic presence in the territory can be seen today in various ways: the language, the landscape, the monuments… but it is undoubtedly the reflection in the urban planning of the localities the aspect that has been best preserved to the present day. Route 1. Mestizo and frontier: Mudejar villages.
Terrer, Villafeliche and Daroca

10.00 h. Terrer. Route 2. Mestizo and frontier: Mudejar Villages .
Fréscano, Torrellas and Tarazona

10.00 h. Fréscano. We will start at the Romanesque chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Huerta. Through the tour we will understand the Islamic urban planning and the link between the town and the water. We will finish with a visit to the Water Museum, located in the former Palace of the Dukes of Villahermosa.

12.30 h. Torrellas. The route proposed in Torrellas immerses us in its mediaeval past through its streets of the route of its streets of Islamic layout, the tower of the parish church of San Martín de Tours and the remains of its Moorish Martín de Tours and the remains of its Moorish and Jewish quarter.

Route 3. Mestizo and frontier: Mudejar Villages .
Fuentes de Ebro, Quinto and Velilla de Ebro

10.00 h. Fuentes de Ebro. The meeting point is the parish church of San Miguel, we will walk through the streets of the town to discover its Moorish quarter and we will finish in Rodén, a place of great beauty and special importance not only for its history but also for its main building material: alabaster.

12.00 h. Quinto. Our meeting point will be the Mudejar church called “El Piquete”, dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, where the Museum of Mummies of Quinto is currently located. The route is completed with a stroll through the town enjoying its urban fabric.

16.30 h. Velilla de Ebro. In Velilla de Ebro, the importance of the water resources created in the Islamic period and their relationship with the agricultural landscape is emphasised . created in Islamic times and their relationship with the agricultural landscape, image through which we understand the landscape of villages today.

Route 4. Mestizo and frontier: Mudejar Villages .
Gelsa, Calatorao and Muel

10.00 h. Gelsa. Gelsa preserves the so-called ‘Barrio Morisco’, made up of a group of winding streets, dead-end alleys and a total of ten covered streets; one of the largest and best preserved in Aragon.

12.30 h. Calatorao. In Calatorao we climb to the highest part of the town, where the castle of Islamic origin is located, and, little by little, gradually, we can immerse ourselves in urban planning through fascinating examples such as the Mudejar mosque.

16.30 h. Muel. From its Roman dam, at the base of the hermitage of the Virgen de la Fuente, we will start the route in which we can enjoy monuments, town development, and some survivals of traditional trades linked to clay that have survived to the present day.

Route 5. Keys to a style. The origins.
Illueca, Villarroya de la Sierra and Torralba de Ribota

10.00 h. Illueca. Our meeting point is the Palacio de los Luna, birthplace of Benedict XIII, better known as Pope Luna, from where we will explain not only its architecture, but also the surrounding environment.

12.30 h. Villarroya de la Sierra. The route starts at the parish church, from where we will walk through the beautiful urban layout to the top of the town, where the Castillo del Rey and the Castillo de la Reina are located.

16.30 h. Torralba de Ribota. The visit to Torralba de Ribota focuses on the church of San Félix, one of the most outstanding and best preserved examples and best preserved in our territory.

Route 6. Keys to a style. The origins.
Zuera, Castejón de Valdejasa and Tauste

10.00 h. Zuera. We will start the tour from the so-called “Arco de la Mora” where we will be able to appreciate one of the most unique examples of hydraulic structure in the Andalusian tradition. From there, we will move on to the church of San Pedro, a link between Romanesque and Mudejar architecture.

12.30 h. Castejón de Valdejasa. We will visit the parish church, an example of Mudejar architecture transformed over time. We will stroll through its streets to discover the area of the wine cellars and houses with a lot of history, such as the Inquisitor’s house.

16.30 h. Tauste. The visit focuses on the church of Santa María, of which its tower stands out powerfully. We can climb to the top of the tower to admire the impressive panoramic view.

Route 7. Keys to a style. The origins.
Pozuel de Ariza, Ariza and Ateca

10.00 h. Pozuel de Ariza. After a brief tour of the town , visiting places such as the oven, we will go to the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Torre, where one of the most beautiful and unique roofs of the Aragonese Mudejar style is hidden.

12.00 h. Ariza. The meeting point is the church of Santa María, from where we will start the tour to visit the castle of Ariza, as well as some singular examples of town planning such as the Jewish quarter and the Moorish quarter.

16.30 h. Ateca. The itinerary focuses on the visit to the church of Santa María, with special interest in its tower, of which we will be able to appreciate its exterior ceramics but also its interior structure.

Route 8. Keys to a style: The origins.
Cosuenda, Cariñena and Longares

10.00 h. Cosuenda. The Lisalta tower marks the start of the route and is a perfect place to contextualise the perfect place to contextualise the town and its surroundings. We will also visit the wine cellar district and some outstanding examples of architecture and town planning.

12.00 h. Cariñena. A bird ' s eye view: the towers

Aragonese Mudejar towers are the most genuine construction of the time, the result of an initial context of defence and control of the territory. On these routes we can travel through the valleys of Zaragoza and understand the visual networks that weave our territory through these landmarks.

Route 9. A Bird 's Eye View . Las Torres.
Aniñón, Belmonte de Gracián and Ricla

10.00 h. Aniñón. We begin our itinerary at the magnificent Church of Nuestra Señora del Castillo, Its tower and façade are decorated with the preserved elements of the Mudejar temple. We will walk through the town to the Olive Oil Museum.

12.30 h. Belmonte de Gracián. The visit will focus on the church of San Miguel. On the outside we will be able to appreciate the striking ornamentation of its tower and apse, as well as the unique palm tree structure inside the tower.

16.30 h. Ricla. After a brief visit to the castle of the town, the visit will focus on the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, an example of a Mudejar temple transformed over the centuries. We can climb to the top of its tower, from where we can enjoy impressive views of the Jalón valley.

Route 10. A Bird 's Eye View. Las Torres.
Romanos, Villarreal de Huerva, Herrera de los Navarros and Villar de los Navarros.

10.00 h. Romanos. The route begins at the foot of the tower and inside its defensive enclosure that frames the defensive enclosure that frames the construction of the church. Route 11. A Bird's Eye View . Las Torres.
Utebo, Villamayor de Gállego and Mainar

12.00 h. Villamayor de Gállego. We will find ourselves at the foot of the spectacular Mudejar tower of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. After the visit to the church we will stroll through the town in a pleasant urban route to the hermitage of the Virgen del Pueyo, where we will enjoy incredible views of the valley, as well as the interesting urbanism dotted with stately houses from the modern period.

17.00 h. Mainar. We will end the day visiting the church of Santa Ana in Mainar and, in particular, its beautiful tower, one of the last examples of Mudejar tower we have in our territory.

The construction of space: light and matter

The tour of the fortress-churches invites us to explore a useful yet beautiful typology of buildings in urban centres where the responsible use of resources is combined with a deep respect for nature and a commitment to the sustainability of the environment.

Route 12. The construction of Space. Light and Matter.
Maluenda, Morata de Jiloca and Acered

10.00 h. Maluenda. The visit to the town focuses on the explanation of its abundant and unique Mudejar monuments, starting at the church of Santas Justa and Rufina, passing through the church of San Miguel until arriving at the parish church of Santa María.

12.30 h. Morata de Jiloca. The route focuses on a visit to the most outstanding Mudejar monument: the church of San Martín de Tours, with its particular structure of a fortress church and its impressive ceramic decoration on the façade.

16.30 h. Acered. In Acered we can enjoy a stroll through the town, starting at the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. Its interior is richly decorated with plasterwork in the Islamic tradition. We will enjoy elements of popular architecture such as the local laundry.

Route 13. The construction of Space. Light and Matter.
Borja, Magallón and San Mateo de Gállego

10.00 h. Borja. The meeting point will be at the Ex Collegiate Church of Santa Maria, where the museum is also located. We will continue our visit to the Casa de las Conchas (House of the Shells ) and then we will go to the market square and stroll through its streets to the old parish church of San Miguel, now an archaeological museum. We will also visit the Casa de la Estanca, a place of incredible beauty.

12.30 h. Magallón. The visit starts at the old church of Nuestra Señora de la Huerta. We will walk through Magallón until we reach the Moorish and Jewish quarters, to go up to the parish church of San Lorenzo, which preserves part of the original Mudejar church and from where we will be able to enjoy magnificent views.

17.00 h. San Mateo de Gállego. We will start our visit at the church of San Mateo Apóstol, having the opportunity to access its tower and to appreciate the view of the the view of the river as it passes through the town. Afterwards, we will go on an urban tour identifying elements of heritage interest in the town.

Military orders and territory

The Military Orders played a fundamental role in the territorial administration of Medieval Aragon. Route 15. Military orders and territory.
Alpartir, Ricla and Torres de Berrellén

10.00h Alpartir. After a pleasant urban stroll, we will go to the remains of the Franciscan convent of San Cristóbal, to make reference to a fundamental character in the history of Aragon, Fray Martín de Alpartir.

12.30h Ricla. For several centuries, the town was an important encomienda of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre. Its interest lay, above all, in the rich natural resources surrounding the town.

16.30 h. Torres de Berrellén. The town has its origins in a defensive enclosure called El Castellar, a Templar possession throughout the centuries. The enclave is separated from the present-day town by the river Ebro, which can be crossed by a towboat.

World Heritage Mudejar Routes

Aragonese Mudejar is a unique and genuine style of our territory. Its Outstanding Universal Value (OUV), as well as the uniqueness and integrity of some of its buildings, made it internationally recognised through the declaration of the Aragonese Mudejar style, led to its international recognition through the declaration of “Mudejar Architecture of Aragon” as a Unesco of ” Mudejar Architecture of Aragon” as a Unesco World Heritage Site. Three of the member towns of Territorio Mudéjar hold this mark: Calatayud, Cervera de la Cañada and Tobed, Do you dare to discover them through this very special route?

9.00 h. Zaragoza. We will start our tour in Zaragoza thanks to our collaborating monuments: in the church of San Pablo, in April, and in the Parroquieta de La Seo, in June and December.

In December we will also celebrate the anniversary of the 2001 World Heritage declaration.

11.30 h. Tobed. The route begins at the Mahoma Calahorrí Mudejar Museum. From there, the urban route continues, taking in such interesting examples as the 16th century fish market and the church of the Virgin of Tobed, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001.

The proposed itineraries are the result of the Mudejar Territory Research Stays, dedicated to Professor Gonzalo M. Borrás Gualis, a staunch defender of the management of Aragonese heritage and territory.

His work exemplified with perfect coherence the possibility of combining research work of high scientific impact with a commitment to the land and its people. of high scientific impact with a commitment to the land and its people, not only favouring the knowledge, conservation and dissemination of its historical-artistic heritage, but also by modernising work processes and by proposing innovative innovation projects in which natural, cultural and heritage resources are a key element in the future of the towns.

Through these routes, we show the results of some of the studies carried out by the researchers who make up our team.

Mudéjarplaster.
Quinto, Villamayor de Gállego and Zuera

The aim of the route is to present the conclusions of the research carried out by the architect Pedro Bel in several of the localities of Territorio Mudéjar. It highlights the importance of knowing and preserving the legacy and knowledge of Mudejar plaster manufacture, a process that remained unchanged since the Islamic period, around the 8th century, until the mid-20th century, when the link in the knowledge transmitted and refined over many generations was broken.

The aim of the route is to present the conclusions of the research carried out by the specialist in historical carpentry Ángel María Martín López and the team led by Myriam Monterde in several of the localities of Territorio Mudéjar. Through these routes we will understand the wooden structures both from
their technical-constructive part and their decorative part.

Borja Saviñán y Terrer

Professor Esteban Sarasa Sánchez holds a PhD in Medieval History and is Emeritus Professor in the Department of Medieval History at the University of Zaragoza. He has also been a member of the scientific committee of Territorio Mudéjar since its creation as an association.

In our first “author’s route”, the teacher will accompany us on an urban walk through the different localities talking to us about the Mudejars and Mudejarism. In this walk-lecture, the streets, houses, old businesses and different ways of life will allow us to better understand the Mudejar culture in Aragon.
