Turiaso

Tarazona was founded under the name of Turiaso, according to the legend of the town, was built by Tubal-Cain and rebuilt by Hercules. In the 1st century BC The city probably already stretched out towards both banks of the river Queiles.

From the 3rd century onwards, the city was gradually abandoned due to political instability within the Roman Empire. By the early 8th century, Tarazona was under Islamic rule, a situation that lasted until 1119, when it was reconquered by Alfonso I the Battler.

Tarazona was a place where different cultures coexisted in medieval times. Almost the entire urban layout from that period has survived, which we can appreciate by exploring its Moorish and Jewish quarters, as well as a large number of buildings dating from that time.

Monuments of a unique nature

The Mudejar style in Tarazona has its own distinctive character. An example of this uniqueness is the cathedral of Santa María de la Huerta. The beginnings of the Mudejar works within the Cathedral of Tarazona began due to the need for reconstruction of the cathedral itself due to the War of the Two Pedros. Encontramos mudéjares intervenciones importantes como la torre, el cimborrio y el claustro. El claustro es único debido a que se cierra por completo con celosías, en su mayoría con motivos de tradición cristiana, pero su sentido estético es de tradición islámica.

We found other monuments of particular importance: the church of La Magdalena has preserved within its interior the system of roofing of wood in the Mudejar style in one of the side aisles and a piece of liturgical furniture from a Moorish workshop in the town nearby of Torrellas dating from the 16th century.

Other notable buildings that you’ll find in the town centre include such as the Bishop’s Palace, the church of St Michael the Archangel, the Palace of Eguarás, the Town Hall etc.

We find Mudejar features of significance such as the tower, the dome and the cloister. The cloister is unique because it is completely enclosed by latticework with lattices, most of which feature motifs from Christian tradition, but its aesthetic sense is that of Islamic tradition.
